Deleting and Purging problem--where are my messages going?

I have an IMAP email account. I just upgraded from XP, where when I deleted
a message in Outlook Express a ---- line went through the message, and then I
could purge manually or have it purge automatically on closing. This allowed
me to take a look at everything that was marked for deletion, before choosing
to purge the messages.

With Windows Mail in Vista, when I delete a message it immediately
disappears (I guess it's just marked for deletion?, but I don't see in
Deleted Items or anywhere, so it's basically unrecoverable!). Checking my
Inbox a different way, online through my school web-based account, shows the
message crossed out, which I can then undelete through that account. If I
wait 5 minutes, then even the online version purges the message Windows Mail
marked for deletion. I don't know what's going on--I just want a way to
recover deleted items.

In Tools-->Options-->Advanced-->Maintenance, I have all the boxes unchecked.
I tried using my email with a POP account but the same problems kept
happening. Someone please help!

Okay, one more thing: I figured out part of it on my own--I had to add a
folder and name it "Deleted Items". Now my messages are going there after
deletion. But how do I get them to stay in the Inbox and just be crossed
out??

Just figured it out from another post. First uncheck
"tools/options/advanced/IMAP/use the Deleted Items folder with IMAP
accounts", then check "view/current view/show deleted messages"

Cheers,
