Deleting an NTFS partition?

What's the best way to do this? Can I boot from a Win98 floppy and use
FDISK or will it not see the NTFS partition? Formatting and installing from
XP CD leaves traces of previous install and boot menu shows 2 XP's although
there's only one there. Have managed to get rid of 2nd by using msconfig
but don't feel it's an ideal solution, it's now using a modified boot.ini
file. Have Googled the question but am confused by much of the advice
there.

Booting from a 9x floppy won't allow you to see an NTFS partition. However,
if you follow the steps correctly, you can delete and recreate any partition
during setup as follows:

Boot with the XP CD in the drive. When you see the message on the boot
screen to "Press any key in order to boot from the CD," do so.

After loading drivers and files, you should be taken to a screen with
the following:

To Setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To Repair a Windows XP Installation using Recovery Console press R.
To Quit setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

In your case, press ENTER.

Agree to the License agreement by pressing F8.

You will then be taken to a screen with two options.

To repair the selected Windows XP installation press R.
To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing,
press ESC.

This will bring you to a partition map where you
can delete, create and format partitions.
Select the drive you wish to format, delete the partition, then create a new
partition, format as desired and continue with XP installation.

If it's a partition other than the XP system partition or boot drive,
you can delete it from within XP. You need to do this from with Disk
Management in XP. To access, right click on the My Computer icon and
select Manage. This will bring up computer management. In there,
under Storage, select Disk Management. There you can right click on
any partition and select Delete. Note as I stated that the delete
option will not be available on the system partition.

You can delete NTFS partitions from a 98 boot disk using fdisk as long
as it is a primary partition. It will show in fdisk as a non-DOS
partition. If the NTFS partition is a logical drive in an extended
partition, fdisk will not be able to delete those.

Michael Solomon has provided the steps necessary to delete an NTFS
partition by booting from the XP CD in such a way that it won't modify
your boot files.

So nice to see someone spell the contraction - ( you're ) - correctly.
