DELETING AN INCOMPLETE FILE

I have an incomplete .avi file on my hard drive which is 492MB. I would like to delete the file from my system, but everytime I try to delete it, I receive a message "Cannot delete this file it being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again." However, no other person or program is using the file at the time I'm trying to delete it

Can you advise how to delete this file?

Thank you for your response. At what point in the process and how do I log in as administrator in the "safe mode" to be able to delete this file?

When you start in "save mode" you will get your regular prompt. Log in as
administrator there. I assume you are using XP-Pro, I think the admin
account for XP-Home is "Owner."

Did you mean log in under "Safe Mode" not "Save Mode"? If so, I logged in under Safe Mode, as Administrator and I entered the Administrator Password. When I'm in Administrator Mode, the file is not in one of the locations where it is when I log in as myself (namely the My Briefcase Folder). In any event, I still couldn't delete this file in the other location where I can see it. The same error message comes up about "unable to delete file because someone else is using it" (exact wording is listed in my initial posting).

I am using XP Home Edition. Do I type in "Owner" (with the parentheses?) under the log in name, because I've been typing Administrator in the log in box? Then do I type in the Administrator password I've set up?

Hi SLK,

To delete the file in Windows XP, remove the following registry key.

Goto Start >Run >Type "regedit" go to
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850D
C73E}\InProcServer32] - Delete this key

This prevents Windows Explorer from loading shmedia.dll in response to
the property queries on these files.

Or go to Kelly's site

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

and scroll down to line 39 'Delete an undeletable file on Windows XP'

Good luck
