DELETING 'ADMINISTRATOR' SETTINGS ON A USED LAPTOP

I RECENTLY PURCHACED THIS USED LAPTOP FROM A CO-WORKER WHO HAS MOVED TO
SOMEWHERE IN FLORIDA. PROBLEM: I CANNOT CHANGE THE DISPLAY SETTINGS OR
ADD/DELETE PROGRAMS DUE TO AN ERROR MESSAGE SAYING THAT THE OPERATION IS
TERMINATED AND TO SEE THE ADMINISTRATOR. SINCE I AM NOW THE ADMINISTRATOR,
HOW CAN I DELETE/UPDATE SETTINGS TO REFLECT NEW OWNERSHIP AND RID MYSELF OF
THIS BLOCK?
 
What Edition of XP is it? Pro? if not, boot to safe mode as default
"Administrator" and create an admin account for yourself.

All uppercase lettering is difficult to read and considered the equivalent
of 'shouting' by others. You may wish to try 'mixed case' sentences - in
the normal way - like many of the common publications you might find
everywhere.

Used laptop... Wipe it and install everything from scratch. If your
'co-worker' did not give you the stuff necessary to do this, your co-worker
has shorted you (or perhaps just never knew how to do this - dependent on
the make/model of the laptop and the method the original manufacturer
provided to restore the system to its 'as shipped' state.
 
Thanks for the advice on both counts. I capitalized because it was easier to
read and I didn't have to be concerned with capitalization. Sorry. I did't
realize it had political implications.

Ouch! Please don't yell at us. We can hear you if type normally, in
mixed case.

If I bought a used computer, the first thing I would do with it would
be to reinstall the operating system cleanly. You have no idea how the
computer has been maintained, what has been installed incorrectly,
what is missing, what viruses and spyware there may be, etc. I
wouldn't want to live with somebody else's mistakes and problems,
possibility of kiddie porn, etc., and I wouldn't recommend that anyone
else do either.

1: Ow, my ears hurt from your screaming (all caps).
2: Ow, my eyes hurt from having to read all caps.
3: A child tries to command attention by screaming.
4: Screamers should be ignored.
5: From your lower-cased moniker, obviously your keyboard is not broke
with a stuck Shift key.

For a solution:
- Insert the bootable installation CD into the CD/DVD drive.
- Boot the computer.
- Boot from the CD.
- Start the install.
- Select to format the current OS partition to wipe out all the old
crap.
- Continue the installation of a fresh copy of the OS.

(Yeah, I didn't follow my own advice #4.)
