I want to delete the word pubic from the dictionary. We
often use the wordpublic and it is embarrassing when it
goes out as pubic instead of public. If I delete pubic
it will catch it during spellcheck.
Thanks

Mike has directed you to my article on this subject, where you'll find that
you're not the only one who has been embarrassed by this. If it makes you
feel any better, the first edition of Beverly Sills' autobiography referred
to the first time she performed "in pubic." <g>

Thank you Mike for your help. The information you
requested is Microsoft Word 2002, Windows XP Professional
Version 5.1.2600 Service pack 1 Build 2600.
Anything else?
I'll stand by for further instructions.

I tried the instructions from the article. It only
addressed word 97 or 2000. I was unsuccessful. T

he file name for the dictionary was MSSP3EN.LEX and I
made the text file with the one word pubic in it and
named it MSSP3EN.exc and stored it in the same location
on the MSSP3EN.LEX file and also in the C:Documents and
Settings/Sybil Farris/Application Data/Microsoft/Proof
directory where my Custom.Dic file is located.

The word pubic is still accepted as correct during the
spell check function. I don't know what I did wrong or
if it is just different in word 2002.

I hope you can shed some light on this.

Thank you.

Thank you for your help, but a colleque has given me an
alternative that will suit my needs.

I have used the auto correct function. On the tools menu
select auto correct options then choose the auto correct
tab and where it says replace type in pubic (or the
undesirable word) and where it says with type in public (
or the desired word.) Word will then change it
automatically as you type it.

Happy Holidays.

I have Word 2002, and my exclude dictionary is Mssp3en.exc; it is in
C:\Documents and Settings\Suzanne S. Barnhill\Application
Data\Microsoft\Proof. It contains three words (abut, acknowledgement, and
pubic) and works as advertised.

That's a useful tip. I followed the instructions to set up an .exc file
and it works. Thanks.
