Deleting A Set of Personal Folders

While wrestling with the problem of cleaning up and sharing a .pst folder
between two machines on different platforms (98SE & XP), ended up with what
looks like 2 .pst's. I don't have a working duplication here (I don't think)
because the last Inbox message date is the day I made the duplicate.

What I believe happened here is that I made a copy from the 98SE to the XP
then from the XP, I made Outlook use the copy. Problem is... I didn't see
outlook in the Outlook Today Folder List, the Calendar was blank, and my
Contacts didn't show (I think I checked the Contacts). Soooo... I IMPORTED
the copy of the .pst. Now for the past week I've been using my .pst in the
Outlook Today area, with all parts works as expected. However, today I
noticed I have another set of folders at the very bottom of my Folder List
on the same level as Outlook Today. I think that's what was brought in when
I originally pointed the program to the location of the copy.

I'd like to get rid of that second set of folders (complete with Inbox that
isn't collecting anything). Do I just highlight and delete it?

Hi, John. I sympathize. I believe I did exactly the same thing a year or two
ago.....and as I recall, I did just what you're contemplating.....delete the
spares.......and I believe it worked OK. (Sorry to not sound as positive as
I'm sure you'd like to hear me sound.....BUT..)
Why not try it. All you've got to lose is your job, your entire contact
file, every critical contract you've mailed in the last..........just
kidding. I think you'll be all right. You may want to wait for one or two
more opinions though!

Mike.

You can try right-clicking its root folder and selecting Close from the
menu...that's the usual method, and other steps should only be taken if this
first step doesn't work.

Well Hi Jocelyn! You saved me again. It closed without exception. Haven't
the foggiest where it went but... do I need to do anything more?

You help answer a few questions for me earlier regarding sharing a .pst. I'm
now thinking of setting up a Net Folder. I don't know if this would be the
best way to go but I'd like to try it and see how it works. I don't know
what to expect. I guess I'll end up with a Personal Folder like the one I
just closed but it'll appear on both machines. If that's the case, I suppose
I'd just forget about the one in Outlook Today and use it (Net Folder)?

You shouldn't have to do anything more. Once the unneeded .PST has been
closed, it should stay closed. It may still exist on your hard drive, but I
wouldn't worry about it.

As for the Net Folders, I don't have much experience with them, but I do
know they tend to be buggy (which is why they were discontinued in Outlook
2002). If you decide to try it, you can always post back here if you run
into problems.
