deleting a partition/boot option

I have a windows XP machine that I had to reinstall XP on.
After I re-installed it, I thought it would erase over the
first install. It did but it didn't....when it's first
turned on, it lists 2 boot options and asks to select one,
they of course all both called the same thing - Windows XP
Professional. Picking the second one gets an error because
it's not really there. I'm wondering how to eliminate that
option. I've already gone into the part of the control
panel/admin tools/disk management and deleted that
partition with no problems (this was based on the first
time I posted a message about this and looked it up on
line). But it still lists that option on startup. Is there
anyway to get rid of it for good? Not that it's a big
problem, but I'm curious anyway.

Remove the option you no longer want from boot.ini found in the root of the
system partition. Explorer|Tools|Folder Options|View, then radio button for
"Show hidden files and folders", then uncheck the box for "Hide protected
operating system files"

I can't find a boot.ini file, only boot.ini.backup. I made the change
(it seemed obvious what line to delete, even though I've never messed
with those kinds of files before). But alas, nothing changed. Should I
change the boot.ini.backup to just boot.ini ? Is there supposed to be
a boot.ini file, not a boot.ini.backup, should there be both? I looked
for hidden system files, but still can't find it...I looked on other
PCs as well and only found the backup file, in the windows/pss folder.
What's my next step.
By the way, thank you so much for replying in the first place...I'm a
little lost about this kind of stuff.

You may have missed;

uncheck the box for "Hide protected operating system files"

I've tried that...still no luck when do a search for it. I'm a bit new
to this, but I guess I do know that there HAS to be a boot.ini file
somewhere.
What directory should it be in?
Thanks for your help so far....

Always the root of the system partition. From a command prompt cd to the
root of C:\ and type

edit boot.ini
