Deleting a file takes forever

When i go to delete any file even a shortcut it takes
about 5 minutes. I defraged the hard drive a few times any
other suggestions.

Some suggestions:

Scan for viruses
Check event log
See what processes are runing (ctrl-alt-del, task manager) are any taking
up lots of cpu time or memory (besides System Idle)?
