"Deleted without being read" reply in Outlook

What is the purpose of this feature? Why is it necessary for a sender to know
that the recipient of her email not only didn't read it but deleted it? I
think it's offensive and it serves no purppose.

It's used for message tracking. If you don't want to send receipts back,
disable them.

Note there is a bug in IMAP accounts that sends RR back regardless of the
setting. To avoid problems, mark items read in Outlook before deleting.
