ok so im a dumb blonde - was fiddling around with
the "Advanced Tools-->System Explorers-->Startup
Programs" and managed to delete a file called Hot Keys.
Since then Ive realised that this is my only way of
adjusting the volume on the laptop without going into
actual volume control....which is much more of a pain in
the arse.
ANYWAY the question is, is there a way to recover a
permanently removed program? im guessing not but im
hoping someone out there knows more about it than me and
can shed some light on the matter.
Cheers muchly

You haven't really removed the program itself from your drive, you've just
removed the startup item that loads it when the OS starts up.

You probably have this utility on a CD that came with your machine. Another
way to find it might be to check out the vendors web site and find an
updated version, or simply a place where such things are available for
download for customers that have lost the CD.

Reinstallation of the utility is the easiest way to get it back into the
startup area. Alternatively, looking at the details on a similar machine,
using that same tool in Microsoft Antispyware, would tell you what registry
entry to modify to put it back the way it was originally. The vendors tech
support might be able to help you through this, as well.

I am only a novice but I believe that if you do a System
Restore to a checkpoint prior to the statup entry removal
you should regain your Hot Keys. This helped me when I
went to far when using CCleaner.
