Deleted Items Folder

I cannot empty the deleted items folder, the mail stays there and it says an
unknown error has occurred. Has anybody got any ideas please.

This is a common problem with no guaranteed solution.

Some have reported that using the Edit Menu>Empty deleted items, works but
it only removes them one at a time.
