Windows XP Deleted items delete permanently! PLEASE HELP!!

When I delete items they don't go to the trash can but instead permanently delete, (I guess...I can't find them)!!!

Is there a place on XP to go to that has a setting to send deleted files to the trash can instead of permanently delete??

Need help desparately!!!

Right click on the recycle bin > properties. uncleck the box that says 'do not move files to the recycle bin...... blah blah'. Hit ok.
