many thanks - im using outlook 2003, in a new pc. actually i had the same
problem in outlook 2002 on a different pc.
I enter the contact details in the normal way for adding a contact and i
have made sure that in the contact's email details there are no other
email
addresses , eg nothing under email 2 or 3.
But still when i enter the contact name in a new email message, the
auto-insert function still just puts in the old address - whihc i
typically
wont notice until i get a reject message later that the address was not
valid.

Impossible to say.
You have not provided your Outlook version nor the method by which you
are
inserting the address.
We cannot just makes guesses.

I have deleted an email address from my contacts list and replaced it
with
a
new one, but when i send emails to that contact, outlook still inserts
the
old address.
How can i permanently delete the old address?
