I am using Outlook XP. When entering a person's name into the TO: line of
an email message a small box appears when more than one name shares the
first few letters I have entered, and this is as it should be. However in
more than one instance one of the names offered in the box is of a contact
that was deleted long ago. I cannot find an instance of the name in my
Contacts or anywhere else. I would like to delete these unneeded names.
What have I overlooked in searching for these 'old' contact names? A search
of C: didn't turn up any of them. TIA, Dick

Not a related question at all.
Remove the invalid reference to a Contacts Folder here:
Go to Tools > E-mail accounts > View or change existing directories or
address books > Outlook Address Book > Change. >

I am tagging along on Dick's question - I have the same problem with
Outlook XP but it applies to an entire contact list. When I moved my old
contacts over to my new computer, I created a new contact list to give me
time to clean up my old contacts. After I had merged the two lists, i
deleted the redundant (old) Contacts folder. However, every time I go to
look up an e-mail address, the name of the deleted Contacts folder still
appears. How can I get rid of it? TIA, Shardlow

Russ - thanks for answering even tho I was unknowingly off-topic. I'll try your suggestion.
