deleted COM port - modem attaches to PCI

I am using an HP zt100 series laptop with Windows XP home
edition. I have downloaded/installed all the update
patches from microsoft. Within the last week my COM port
became invisible in Device Manager ... at the same time,
of course, I could no longer connect to the internet ...
In looking through the logs I came up with this error
message: "While validating that \Device\Serial0 was really
a serial port, the contents of the divisor latch register
was identical to the interrupt enable and the receive
registers. The device is assumed not to be a serial port
and will be deleted." I have tried to reinstall the COM
port, which I can do, but upon rebooting it is no longer
there either ... the modem is now attached to a PCI
address, and does not work. I have tried uninstalling and
reinstalling, but it continues to attach to the PCI
address. Any suggestions or help, please?? Thanks in
advance.

Hi
you could try diconecting the modem switch the PC on then
off re conect your modem see if it will find its self
again
If not try a restore back before you downloaded updates

Thanks ... tried uninstalling modem, turning off pc. Turn
pc back on and it does find the modem and install it with
correct drivers, etc ... problem, it attaches to PCI
Bus ... it seems my bigger problem is that the COM port is
being deleted ... I cannot even see one in Device Manager,
only the LPT port ... I add a COM port, try to configure
it, but then when I reboot, it still tells me it is not
turned on ... therefor, no luck with the modem!! When
looking at the COM port in Device Manager it has the
exclamation point beside it, and it has no location listed
under its properties ... again, thanks for any
suggestions ...

I love that error message, I wonder how many users know what a divisor latch
is.

I used to get this message when the system detected my internal modem and
determined that it wasn't a serial port (correct) but everything worked fine
anyway. Try and configure the modem to use COM5 so it doesn't interfere
with your builtin ports.

Thank you for your help ... I can certainly say that I
have no idea what a divisor latch is (and still don't) ...
I am just having no luck ... I guess I don't really know
how to configure the modem to use COM 5 ... I changed it
under "Advanced" and it shows up several places as
attached to COM 5, but in the "General" modem properties
it still says the modem is on a PCI Location .... COM 3
doesn't even show up in Device Manager (even when I force
it to show hidden devices), and yet hyperterminal says to
open COM 3 when I try to dial from there (just to see if
anything is working!) ... I know this sounds pretty
convoluted (I feel pretty much that way, too) ... I can't
delete and reinstall COM 3, because I can't get it to show
up anywhere, and yet COM 5 doesn't work either ... if you
have any other suggestions (short of the dreaded format-
hard-drive-and-start-completely-over), I am most
appreciative!!

Go the Modem tab instead of General. It should show which port it is in the
upper left. If you want to move it to a different port, use the advanced
tab/advanced port settings.

Thanks, Ken, for your assistance ... worked almost all
weekend trying different things ... could get the modem
attached to COM5, but was told that COM5 was not turned on
and, of course, there was no dial tone, so no luck. Tried
several diagnostics programs ... all saying that the modem
is fine (can these really be believed). Finally, resorted
to "Restore System" (backed up all I could think of, but I
am sure I forgot some things - like some of my Excel
scripts) ... and, guess what?!? Still not working!! Right
after restoring I could see in Device Manager, when I
forced all hardware devices to show up, that there is a
serial port with an exclamation mark beside it ... I left
that alone and tried to add another serial port, which I
couldn't really find exactly, so I added a COM port ... it
added COM10 with an exclamation point (not turned on) and
deleted the serial port ... now when I try to dial, I get
a quick buzz, and then nothing, and am told there is no
dial tone. Just letting you know, since you were trying
to be helpful ... so now I can't Activate (reactivate) XP
.... and I guess I'll have to break down and take the
computer to be fixed ... UNLESS, there is another thought
after hearing these actions and their results (or lack
therof) ... Thanks!!!! Trish

For a internal PCI modem there should *not* be an entry under ports in

Thanks, Ken.
I changed my modem to COM5 ... looked at Network
Connection and it still showed COM3 ... rebooted computer
and the Network Connection then showed COM5 ... deleted
and redid the Network Connection anyway, just to make sure
it was attached correctly ... could hear a slight noise
when I tried to make the connection, but nothing else.

Changed back to COM3 (which the computer had put the modem
on when I restored the system) .. rebooted computer and
redid Network Connection ... could still hear the slight
noise when it tried to dial, but nothing else.

Unchecked the box "Wait for Dial Tone" ... I could then
hear the phone dial the number, but then no "handshake"
sound ... I picked up the phone and seemed to be listening
to just "open air" ... talked into the phone and could
hear my voice through the computer speaker ... eventually,
though, got error #678 "the remote computer did not
respond". Used the phone to dial the internet number and
it connected without a hitch to the internet (could hear
the "handshake" immediately)

I have also tried several cords going from telephone
outlet to computer, so I feel pretty confidant that is not
the problem.

Thanks again for your assistance!

how to configure the modem to use COM 5 ... I changed it
under "Advanced" and it shows up several places as
attached to COM 5, but in the "General" modem properties
it still says the modem is on a PCI Location .... COM 3
doesn't even show up in Device Manager (even when I
force
it to show hidden devices), and yet hyperterminal says
to
open COM 3 when I try to dial from there (just to see if
anything is working!) ... I know this sounds pretty
convoluted (I feel pretty much that way, too) ... I
can't
delete and reinstall COM 3, because I can't get it to
show
up anywhere, and yet COM 5 doesn't work either .... if
you
have any other suggestions (short of the dreaded format-
hard-drive-and-start-completely-over), I am most
appreciative!!

I love that error message, I wonder how many
users
know
what a divisor latch
is.

I used to get this message when the system
detected
my
internal modem and
determined that it wasn't a serial port (correct) but
everything worked fine
anyway. Try and configure the modem to use COM5
so
it
doesn't interfere
with your builtin ports.

Thanks ... tried uninstalling modem, turning
off
pc.
Turn
pc back on and it does find the modem and
install
it
with
correct drivers, etc ... problem, it attaches
to
PCI
Bus ... it seems my bigger problem is that the COM
port
is
being deleted ... I cannot even see one in Device
Manager,
only the LPT port ... I add a COM port, try to
configure
it, but then when I reboot, it still tells me
it
is
not
turned on ... therefor, no luck with the
modem!!
When
looking at the COM port in Device Manager it
has
the
exclamation point beside it, and it has no location
listed
under its properties ... again, thanks for any
suggestions ...

Hi
you could try diconecting the modem switch the PC on
then
off re conect your modem see if it will find its
self
again
If not try a restore back before you downloaded
updates

I am using an HP zt100 series laptop with Windows
XP
home
edition. I have downloaded/installed all the update
patches from microsoft. Within the last week
my
COM
port
became invisible in Device Manager ... at the same
time,
of course, I could no longer connect to the
internet ...
In looking through the logs I came up with this
error
message: "While validating that
\Device\Serial0
was
really
a serial port, the contents of the divisor latch
register
was identical to the interrupt enable and the
receive
registers. The device is assumed not to be a serial
port
and will be deleted." I have tried to
reinstall
the
COM
port, which I can do, but upon rebooting it
is
no
longer
there either ... the modem is now attached
to a
PCI
address, and does not work. I have tried
uninstalling
and
reinstalling, but it continues to attach to
the
PCI
address. Any suggestions or help, please?? Thanks
in
advance.
