So, every time I clicked a link in someone's info on AIM,
the anti-virus program I have, Avast, would pop up and
tell me there was a virus. So, after that happening about
5 times, I thought instead of hitting "Repair" I'd
hit "Delete."

Big mistake. Because now, I can't click on any links in
people's profiles, because an error message will pop up
that says "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\iexplore.exe; system error 5." Then after I
click "ok" another box pops up that says "Unable to find
an application to handle the protocol "http" of the
hyperlink you selected." and it gives you the option to
browse for an application to use.

MORE IMPORTANTLY, I can't open any applications or
programs on my computer other than IE. A message pops up
that either says "Windows cannot access the specified
device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate
permissions to access the item." OR "Windows cannot
find 'C:\whatever file I'm trying to open up.exe'. Make
sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.
TO search for a file, clock the Start button, and then
click Search."

What did I do? I'm afraid I messed everything up! And
someone suggested a few things to download that might
help, but I can get them downloaded on my computer, but I
can't install or run them, because if I try, I get the
error message. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
Thank you!

Which verson of Windows? If WindowsME or XP you could use System Restore to
go to a backup created before the problem started.

Don

It's Windows XP. I tried to go to System Restore, but I
get the error when I try to open that, too. I'm stuck. :(
