Delete items from history?

I have a user who tries to delete *some* items from history by clicking the
item and then hitting the Del key. After the usual prompt, the item
*appears* to go away (it seems to take a long time though). But the next
time he opens IE they are all back! He doesn't want to get rid of
everything, so Clear History isn't an option. Any ideas folks?

If the user is accessing the History folder via Windows Explorer, with no IE
windows open, this should work. If the user is using the History Explorer
Bar in IE, the fact that IE is open may be interfering. Or, another program
may be interfering.

See:
323687 - Clearing History May Not Remove Pages You Visited Today in Internet
Explorer: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=323687

Also, the TypedURLs list (drop down list from the Address Bar) is a
different list entirely.
See: 157729 - How to Clear the History Entries in Internet Explorer:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q157729
For an easier, safer removal method, go to
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm
and download "DelTypedURL." This INF file will remove ALL entries.

These two freeware programs will remove SOME or ALL entries:
IE Address Bar Editor: http://www.freesoft.fsnet.co.uk/ieedit01.htm
EditURLs: http://www.aandrc.com/editurls/index.htm

Hi Ron :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Close all instances of IE.

Go to Start>Run>type regedit (enter)

Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\TypedURLs

Find the offending URL, select it, hit delete.

or....

To delete an item from the History in IE, click the History toolbar button
which will open the History list in the sidebar window, and you can right
click on any entry and select delete.

also..take a look here:

History Items Remain After Being Deleted from Cache
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q218966/

To delete an item in the AutoComplete list:

To remove an entry that is erroneous, outdated, or private, highlight it
using the Down Arrow (not the mouse) and press Shift + Delete.

Hope this helps :-)
