Hi folks
My company have a win 2000 server with a database on it. Now we are gonna
move it to a new server. To make things easier I would like the new server to
have the same name an ip-address as the old one. Must I first delete the old
account to give the new server the same name as the old one. Is there a risk
I can´t name the new the same accountname I just deleted?. Does it work just
to disable the old account, can I then name the new the same name?

Thanks to all answers I can get to this matter in hurry

When a server has joined the domain, a computer account is created in the
domain. This computer account is assigned a SID and a password to communicate
with the DC when it boots up for authentication.

To reuse the same computer name again, a clean removal should be
1. remove the old server
2. delete the computer account representing the old server fro the AD
3. remove the computer name from WINS (if you are using)
4. remove the computer name from DNS
5. install the new server and use the same name again.

HTH.

Is it absolutely necessary that the server have the old name & IP address?
