Delete a Master Doc?

Last year I used Master Documents to be able to search across multiple files and to locate style inconsistences. The project is finished and I want to keep the individual files, but I'd like to get rid of the Master Doc. If I simply delete the Master Doc, will that run any risk of damaging the individual files? Perhaps complicating the matter further, the original project was done in WordXP and I'm now using Word 2003.

Deleting a master document won't affect the sub-documents.

"Master Document" is a term of art in Word referring to a "feature" that not
only doesn't work but also destroys documents. The consensus (with the
limited exception of Steve Hudson) among those offering advice on these
newsgroups is that using the Master Document feature is a sure way to
destroy your document. It can destroy parts of your document that you are
not even working on! I think John McGhie said it succinctly when he said
that there are two kinds of Master Documents: Those that are corrupt and
those that will be corrupt soon. See <URL:

information on what goes wrong, and <URL:

how to salvage what you can.
