Lately, when I switch on my desktop, it takes between one and even 10 minutes before it
powers up.
Any ideas as to why this happens ?
Thanks in advance,

Mike

1. Manage your startup.

Start>Run>msconfig [enter]

This brings up the System Configuration Utility. Look on the Startup tab and
find the probable culprit. Uncheck the box next to its name, Apply and OK
out. You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you do you'll
get a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Just tick the box that says in
effect, "don't bother me about this again".

Important - Do not use the System Configuration Utility to stop processes.
Instead, use Start>Run>services.msc [enter] and do not stop any services
unless you really, really know what you're doing.

2. Look for clues in Event Viewer (Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]).

3. Check to make sure your hard drive is not in PIO Mode.

As in pc actually "powering itself up to start",if thats the case, its not a
software
issue,dirty/corroded connections,or in the board or power supply. If
unfamiliar
with that area, try taking to a descent pc shop. With the pc case only, most
will
chk it for free to give some idea.

Define what you mean by "power up", do you mean when it actually turns on or
when you get to the desktop? Power up generally means when the lights turn
on and things start happening, if your talking about getting to the desktop
that's booting up.

One minute is quite reasonable; ten is not.
As others suggested look at how many programs are starting automatically
and try to eliminate some of them. But be careful.

He's even complaining about one minute, and is saying power up, not
boot up, so this looks like a hardware problem, which could be caused
by a balky PSU.
