Hi,

For some time when I am working with multiple browser windows open, when I
open a new window, for about 15 seconds or so, I am unable to click on any
of the windows that are behind the new one.

Any suggestions?

I have done all the spyware, adware, malware, virus checks etc and I am NOT
going to format the hard drive and start again!! OS is W2K.

Regards.
Bill.

clear the cache perhaps?

While having coffee and bread this morning, I read that Bill wrote in

Multiple being more than one!

Multiple = Meaning how many. Can you post back with the number

*Any* of the windows? Or just IE windows? Further, have you checked
for the case where you have multiple IE tasks (i.e., different PIDs which
each show iexplore.exe as the Image Name) to see if any of another
task's windows can be brought to the front.

It's possible that the new window is being marked "Always on Top"
which might make it appear that you couldn't switch to another window.
E.g. Task Manager has a similar option which, depending on the size
of the windows involved, can make it difficult for you to use the one
which has focus.

Any suggestions?

Do you have distinctive differences in Active and Inactive Title bar?
(e.g. using Display Properties, Appearances tab)
Watch the Title bar of the window you are clicking to check for that
indicator of which window is active. Also right-click instead of
left-click so you can use the window's menus. BTW have you tried
minimizing the new window instead? Again, Task Manager can
be used to simulate how you would use that last idea.

FWIW I have XPsp2 and I sometimes have the opposite problem.
I have to *hunt* all through the taskbar for the window that IE or OE
is in the process of opening. ;)

Bill.

Good luck

Robert,

You have hit the nail on the head I think. The behaviour is more like the
new window (this is always with internet explorer) has a 15 second 'always
on top setting'. I can select the older window behind it and the task bar
changes colour, but the new remains in front - for a bout 15 seconds.

Is this a setting somewhere?

Regards.

LOL. The reason that I asked is that on my Win2000Pro I have the same behavior if I have more that 3 IE windows open. With 2 open I do not have this issue. Again with 3 or more I do.

I doubt it but you could try monitoring with RegMon for more clues.

However, I just realized that I get something similar with the
Work Offline/Try Again prompt, also with the Dial-up Connection
prompt. So this suggests that your connection state and access method
could have something to do with your symptom too. E.g. have you ever
had the symptom with local files or even files from a CD drive?
The latter is actually perhaps a useful middle ground for simulation testing.
E.g. it could be slow enough to show you that IE is trying to deal with
an understood delay in accessing the (slow) hardware but then overcompensating
somehow or not being made aware of when the file is eventually ready. Etc.

Good luck
