There is a 3 - 4 minute delay in logging on to Windows,
after booting up my Windows XP. This computer is only two
months old, but the seller is both unreliable and
incompetent. Anyone know what the problem is?

When booting it is loading up too many of your programs
and utilizing your precious PC resources. Do the
following: Start/Run/type MSCONFIG and click Enter.
Click the StartUp tab and uncheck/disable everything
except your anti-virus, if Norton, it will start with NAV.
Click Apply > OK and reboot. Now you have a "lean, mean
machine and should boot in about 25 seconds. Disabling
in msconfig does not delete any files, only stops them
from starting. You can click any icon to activate the
programs.

clear history & temp files.
limit size of history & temp files.
shutdown/restart computer <- this always works for me.

As you can see by the other two posts there are literally
dozens of ways to improve your startup speeds and system
maintenance is the key. Defrag(and keep below 4%) run
chkdsk on occassion. Use the disk cleanup utility and
check all boxs accept compress old files. Get a good
registry cleaner like JV16 Power Tools. Get a good
spyware\adware removal tool like SpyBot Search and
Destroy. Do not store programs or files on the desktop
only the shortcuts should be there.Remove unecessary
utilities in the add\remove programs add\remove windows
components list. You don't need both Internet Explorer and
MSN Explorer for instance. Make sure that the boot
optimizer has been activated in your registry.
Go>start\run and type in regedit and hit ok. Now click the
+ signs in the following order.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Defrg\BootOptimizeFun
ction. Now make sure "enable" on the right side is set to
Y if it isn't then right click on enable and click modify
and type in Y and then click your way out. If it has then
XP will optimize for boot performance about every 3 days
or so. If you wish to do this now then BootVis has
an "Optimize" tool that can help you shave a few seconds
off your boot times. I have two users on this machine and
even going through a log on screen and typing in a
password my system takes about 50secs to get to the
desktop. Keep smiling.
