Delay of 2-3min after winXP loads before I can use it

After windows loads, and goes through the login process
and enters the main windows screen... it will pause for 2-
3 minutes and do NOTHING and not let me do anything
(beyond opening start menu, but not using anything in
there). After this 2-3minutes, the "starting windows"
music will play, and any programs I attemted to start
within this time will suddenly startup and run.

I've done all the critical updates, ran virus scans with
updated viruus definitions,
I've tried loading in diagnostic mode with NOTHING ELSE
loading, and it still delays 2-3minutes on start up.
I've even used the total restoration discs which
reformated and reinstalled XP for me, and the problem is
STILL there. WHen I got the computer originally it did
NOT delay like this, it started right up in a few seconds
once windows was up.

Shouldnt be running this slow... afterall it is a 2.8ghz
computer. Does anyone have any clue what could be wrong?

Your problem sounds like an adware/spyware infection except
that you have reformated the hard drive and reloaded. That
being the case your problem must be hardware. Does the
correct memory and processor speed show up on the 'General'
tab of the 'System Properties' window?

Does Event Viewer offer any clues as to the cause?

Make a note of the precise text of any error message. You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID: and Source Description are important.

Hey guys I think I finally figured out what the problem
was. After doign a selective start in msconfig, finally
narrowed it down to 6 non-microsoft services. 4 being
from Symantec's Norton Antivirus. Well when I turned
them back on and rebooted, It put me back into msconfig
screen again, and right away I saw "Symantec Event
Manager ... Start Pending" So I disabled that only,
and now it starts up right away!

However... with this disabled, norton antivirus now fails
to load up and auto-protect, or email scan, etc.
Anybody know how I can tweak this so that it will still
load "Symantec Event Manager" and not take 2-3 freakin
minutes each time to do it?

Also... on the plus side about reformating my comptuer to
fix this, I did have another problem plaguing my system,
(programs mysteriously 'poofing' while running and
vanishing with no errors) ...so I had to reformat anyhow,
didnt do it ONLY because of the problem with the symantec
event manager luckly.
