Delay/lag in XP

A few days ago my Toshiba Satellite (XP Home version)
started experiencing an approx. 5 second delay in the
middle of activities. For example, when highlighting 5
icons, it will sometimes take 5 seconds for cursor to
recognize the 5th icon and be able to click on it, when
the 1st 4 were normal. Or it might take 5 seconds
between a click on an icon and when it starts to open the
icon. Or it might take 5 seconds before allowing me to
type after I move the cursor.
It just started in the past 2 days, and isn't download
releated.
I've got a minimum of programs in my startup folder. I've
already done the virus/spyware check and that didn't
help. I foolishly updated all my xp with patches so now I
can't restore. The Toshiba folks weren't particularly
helpful. Their conclusion was to wipe the computer clean
and start over with the original disk. That seems a bit
harsh.
Any ideas?

Reinstalling the OS is always the last resort but get
ready to do it if all else fails.

Sounds like a virus/spyware of some type. Didn't say what
you used to check/remove it but many are not completely
effective. I prefer manual removal.

Check the registry for spyware in
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersi
on\Run be on the lookout for anything out of the ordinary
there (there shouldn't be many key there at all) If you
have a question about one do a search on the net for more
information.

Also check your Device Manager, could be a bad driver
somewhere.

Back up your stuff before you go ripping things out! And
good luck!
