This is a startup-problem.

I use windows XP - professional,
and MSN 6.0.

I've always had my PC on a network-internet connection,
now its connected through ADSL, so im still kind of using
a network-connection. But when now using ADSL I experience
a 30second delay after getting in to the windows XP. This
comes after i've chosen my specific user in my XP-startup
(administrator-user).

My first thought was that it maybe had something to do
with my MSN, since this did not load til after the 30sec
delay. I also read both

msnmsgr.exe
msmsgs.exe

in my Tastlist. It also happens that when I do get
connected to the internet after delay, i get a message
that i'm being logged out at my msn, because i've logged
in at another location. Something that implies that i'm
running double MSN - something i cant really see i am
doing from the taskbar/tray.

After removing MSN from my startup with msconfig, i still
got the same 30sec delay, so i'm not really sure this is
the source of the problem.

I've never had multiple users on my XP-setup before, can
this -with me having a new internetconnection - have
anything to do with this annoying delay?

I know i could try removing users, but i want to be
absolutely sure before i have to delete or make drastic
changes to the setup of my pc..

Can you help?

As I understand this, msnmsgr.exe is MSN Messenger and msmsgs.exe is Windows
Messenger. You are running both at present which might be the reason for the
message about being logged in at another location.

If you want to use MSN Messenger, then you will need to run Windows
Messenger and in the options turn off the "Automatically run messenger when
I long on to Windows". Next time you reboot, you should only see
msnmsgr.exe in the tasklist which will be MSN Messenger.

Dear John,

It seems like you may have more than one problem here.

Re the slow startup time it's possible that cause might
have to do with your network settings. You said you
recently installed ADSL, and if the ADSL modem connects
to your computer via ethernet you may want to ensure your
network is set up with the fixed IP required by the ADSL
modem. If in the TCP/IP settings of your local area
connection you specified that you want the computer
to 'automatically search for network connection' then on
start-up it can take XP up to 30 seconds trying to
configure the IP. Try changing this setting to 'Use the
following IP address' and specifiying the address of your
ADSL Modem or Network instead and see if this speeds
things up.

For the second problem of having two Messengers running
try renaming the 'Windows Messenger' folder in
your 'Program Files' directory to something else
like 'Windows Messenger Disable'. Then restart the
computer and check if msmsgs.exe is running this time. If
it's not, then you know for sure that Windows Messenger
was still loading despite your previous attempts. Now you
can either leave things as they are, or if you want to
properly remove Windows Messenger rename the folder to
its original name and do a quick search for 'Uninstall
Windows Messenger' on google...there is a string you can
type into the 'Start>Run' box which actually uninstalls
Windows Messenger but I can't remember it off the top of
my head.

Hope this Helps,

Matt ;)

I would say this has to do with Windows Messenger. I just
followed the instructions on article KB302089 "How to
Prevent Windows Messenger from Running on a Windows XP-
Based Computer" and now my Outlook Express also takes 30
seconds to start up. If I enable again the windows
messenger (changing the DWORD back to 0 from the
instructions on kb302089) Outlook starts in less then 1
sec.
