system goes very slow thought Task Manager shows 99% idle time and half the
memory unused.
Besides Outlook2000 and IE6 ofter stop responding.
Kasperky ison all the time, but no viruses are reported
What might be a problem?
PS. I have formated the HD and reinstalled the OS 2 months ago and from the
very start the speed was not as good as it used to be. The logical disk
these OS is installed has 3G free. It has beed defragmented but no
improvement

How does your system perform if you configure a Clean Boot state? See:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

3GB of free space? That's not much. How large is your hard drive? How
large is the partition with Windows (probably C:) ?

there are a number of reasons why
system performance has degraded.

one of the easiest way to compare
the performance of normal mode
is to boot into safe mode,

where only the system core files
for windows get loaded.

another may be that resources are
causing a bottleneck

for example if your ram memory is
running short "or"

the virtual memory is too small
and can't resize automatically
because there is insufficient
memory to lend for the task.

I can't find the OP's post so I am just responding here.
Perhaps your cpu fan is dead and your cpu is overheating and going into
survival mode.

What version of OS/2 did you install? As for example, OS/2 v3 replaces
win.com (or is it win.exe?) with its own. Which causes Windows to run
like crap by itself. The original win file should still be there.
Renamed to win.bak or something.

I really doubt he installed Warp. He re-installed the Windows OS TWO
months ago.

I got up to FixPak 30 something and I said this is nuts and called it
quits with OS/2. So I don't know how later versions deal with Windows.
And I can't reinstall Warp (original) someday since it will only install
on a drive that is 512MB or smaller. lol

Sorry, I do not understand OS/2 v3.
"My Computer" shows W2000
5.00.2196
SP2
Also what are win.com (or is it win.exe) ? In WINNT/system32/ I have win.com
(25kb) and no win.exe - how shall I know if this is a replaced file?

Don't worry about the OS?2 reference since you did not install it.
I have Win2000Pro (5.00.2195) SP4 and my win.com is also 25kb and I am not
infected. It is 24,848bytes and it is version 5.0.2134.1.
Rt click on win.com and select Properties and see if it is a MS file.
It most likely is.
Why don't you do the MS updates and put in SP4?
Did you check to see if your cpu is running at full speed?
There is a free program called wcpuid (http://www.h-oda.com/ or just Google
for it) that will tell you the speed your cpu is running and also give some
info on your memory.
If the cpu fan quit or slowed way down or the cpu heatsink is clogged up and
your cpu is a pentium, it will run slow to protect itself.

Thanks, Buffalo
Will check wcpuid.

That info of yours about cpu protecting itself agains overheating -
completely new for me. Indeed, I did not clean the ventllation holes for a
while and they got clogged with dust. U do vaccuumclean them and probably I
need to opent the unit to reach the heatsink.

Once we started talking about heat management, perhaps u ill help me with
another problem on my notebook.
When I start it it boots OK, but in 10-15 min it throws that blue-white
screen and reboots. The blue-white screen flashes for a fraction of a second
and I canot read it, only can tell that it is just about 5 lines long.
Then the same repeats but rebuts in, say, 5 min then in 1 min and then
reboots before booting is complete. Finally it stops reacting on the main
switch at all.
If I unplug it and wait for an hour or so, the above will repeat so ther
impression is as if the heat builds there and needs cool down. I cleaned the
fun and the heat sink. no joy. The fun is turning, but the wind is very
weak, felt with a wet hand only. I do not know how strong that wind should
be on notebooks, but on my desktop it is much more stronger.
