Defragmenting Problems

Me2Ewe

When I defrag lately [the last three times anyway] there are always some
files that cannot be defragmented. Here are what they were the last time. Is
there a way to fix this?

Or just ignore it too. Like most things we don't understand about Microsoft.

Yes, delete those files from your system, especially the
pirated versions of Microsoft Office you downloaded.

The main question was where did they come from, they are on a partition that
I don't use & I never heard of some of these like Gnucleous, Partials,
MandrakeLinux? Never had anything to do with these. Why can they not be
defragmented. Is that not just moving files around in better order? Pirated
versions? 5th amendment here. I did purchase my original, but cannot vouch
for my son
 
As I suggested earlier, delete those files and you can defrag normally.
Those are GARBAGE FILES some purposely downloaded, from an
unsecured, peer-to peer network. They are likely laden with viruses
and spyware and serve no useful purpose.

This is a P2P file-sharing program. Your son used Nucleus to try and
download a pirated MS Office.

Mandrake (now called Mandriva) is a Linux distribution. Linux is another
operating system. The CD3.iso is part of the CD set necessary to
install Mandrake Linux. It looks like your son wants to try Linux,
although he hasn't got all the necessary .iso's.

You need to have a little talk with your son. Good luck.

Your computer has a peer-peer sharing program on it and is very likely set
to run at start-up. Peer-peer programs like Gnucleus allow people to share
files with each other. If you check the screenshot at the following link you
will see this application at work.

Behind the "Download" screen is the "Upload" screen. This means that people
are uploading parts of files from you as you are downloading them from
others. Consequently you can do anything with these files unless you
shutdown Gnucleus. You can defrag them and you can't even delete them.
Sometimes you actually have to boot to Safe Mode in order to delete them. If
you find you are having a lot of trouble getting rid of these files try
uninstalling Gnucleus first, reboot and then you should be able to rid
yourself of the problem.

If your son is sharing files he needs to be aware of the dangers. Firstly it
is illegal to share some files, especially copyrighted applications like
Microsoft Products. All computer activity is essentially logged by your ISP.
While rare it is possible that a random check could spot your system as
being one used for illicit activity. Microsoft has a ton of lawyers and ten
tons of money. One would not like to enter into a legal disagreement with
the company. Secondly it is very possible to acquire nasty little programs
called trojans with some of the files transferred through peer-peer
programs. A decent trojan will install itself and give a lot of access to
your system to someone else. You really don't need anyone checking out your
system for credit card numbers and other useful personal data.

Computers are tools and all tools can be used the wrong way. Encourage your
son to save up to purchase his software rather than steal it. In many cases
there are inexpensive alternatives to software. For example OpenOffice is a
very decent freeware alternative to Microsoft Office Suite that can open and
work nicely with most Microsoft documents.
