I recently installed Windows 2000 Professional on my
computer. After I installed the updates on my computer, I
can no longer get the defragmenting program to function.
Every time I try to defragment, the system restarts itself
automatically and says that it detected the drives on my
system. I have also tried installing Norton Utilities on
my system, and running the Speed Disk (their version of
defragmenting) and had similar results. How do I fix this?

Open a CMD prompt and type
CHKDSK C: /F /R
It will ask you to schedule for reboot.
This should find and fix any file system problems.
