Defragmenter Blues :-(

I have been trying to run Defrag on XP Pro for weeks without success. I
have tried everything posted in this NG. I run chkdsk /f, I then run chkdsk
/F /R, I run defrag from the command line, I have run it by right-clicking
on the drive and then Properties, Tools,... I run it from Compmgmt.msc, but
always the same behavior.

Whether I click on Analyze or Defragment, it goes up to 10% and then it
stops with the error message:

"(C:) The connection to the defragmenter engine has been lost. Restart
Defragmentation."

No matter how many times I restart defragmentation, I end up right back here
:-(

are there any ideas?

Thanks Peter.

I run 'sfc /scannow', was prompted and entered the XP CD, the systems
churned for 10 minutes or so, reading files, correcting files, or whatever
it is it was supposed to do, and then it seemed as if it had completed its
job, and closed the app window. So, I went bak and attempted run defrag,
after everything looked to be finished.

Same error message :-( Any other ideas?

Are you able to boot into Safe mode and defrag from there?

I can boot into safe mode and start the Analyze process, but at 31% it stops
with an error in the file

C:\_ISTMP3.DIR\_ISTMP0.DIR\DB9E1.DLL

Thanks

Sounds like a file system issue.

Boot normally and go to the MSDOS command prompt and enter the following
command:

CHKDSK /F /R C:

It will tell you that it can only be done at boot. Agree to this and reboot
your system. When your system reboots, observe carefully as CHKDSK runs on
the drive. It should perform a 5-step check of the file system. Does
CHKDSK say that it finds/fixes any errors? After CHKDSK has finished and
your system reboots, retry defragmenting.

Thank you.

I did as you suggected, and chkdsk went though it (it took a while). No
errors were reported found or fixed. Then, restarted the system, again,
clicked on Start, Clicked on My Computer, Left-Clicked on Drive C:, selected
Properties, Tools and then run the defragmenter. I highlighted the C: drive
and clicked on Analyze. It started working, got to about 10% and then
stopped with the error message:

"The connection to the defragmenter engine has been lost. Restart the
Defragmenting Process."

I shut down, restarted and repeated the process a couple of times. Same
behavior.

This is driving me crazy :-(

As the file indicated earlier is found in your temporary folder, can you
delete the file and then retry?

Thanks for the persistence in helping me, I really appreciate it.

I deleted the file, but the next time around it stops at a different file
(either in the same, or a different folder). Not always on a temp file! I
actually moved whole folders (containing the "apparently" offending files)
off the drive, and tried it again, and again, and again... Same problem, it
would just occur with a different file in a totally different folder :-(

I'm running out of things to try...

I'm having the same problem, except that mine's with XP
Home. In addition to what's already been discussed, I'm
getting two alternating error messages. The first talks
about an error in the C:\Windows\HWinfo.dat file. The
second mentions an error in the
C:\windows\$NtUninstallQ311889$ file. I ran
the 'sfc /scannow' as suggested below and all I can see
it that it ate about 500Megs of disk space.
