Defragmentation Programs--several questions

Hi:

Here's a couple questions I would very much appreciate answers,
or info, for:

1. What part of a drive (say a 120GB Western Digital) is the
fastest for reading.

2. Is there any defragmentation program that works with win98se
that alows you to put specific programs in specific areas of the hard
drive.

3. Do any programs allow you to lock/freeze/keep specific
programs or files from being moved when you defragment a drive.

My reasons for asking: I have a 120GB drive that I am
installing several LARGE games onto, including MS Flight simulator. I
would like these programs to be on the fastest part of the drive, and
I don't want the files moved or broken up whenever I want to
defragment the rest of the drive.

(I know: I should have partitioned the drive into several
smaller ones. But its too late for that now. If I ever get another
hard drive, I won't make the same mistake again.)

Thanks

The most important answer is to the question you didnt even ask.

That answer is that you're wasting your time obsessively
defragging with modern systems and that you wont even
be able to detect any difference in a proper double blind
trial without being allowed to use a benchmark or a
ute that displays the frag status.
1. What part of a drive (say a 120GB
Western Digital) is the fastest for reading.

There aint necessarily any such animal with modern hard drives
which have the sectors per track varying in bands across the platters.
2. Is there any defragmentation program that
works with win98se that alows you to put specific
programs in specific areas of the hard drive.

Depends on what you mean by specific areas.

If you just mean at the beginnning or end of the partition, yes.

If you want more precise control in the sense of track numbers, no.
3. Do any programs allow you to lock/freeze/keep specific
programs or files from being moved when you defragment a drive.
Yes.

No such animal with modern hard drives and that
approach wont work anyway even if there was.
Because the speed of use of that program hardly
ever depends on where the files are on the drive.
and I don't want the files moved or broken up
whenever I want to defragment the rest of the drive.

Pointless mindlessly obsessively defragging modern drives.
(I know: I should have partitioned
the drive into several smaller ones.

That wont necessarily help anyway. You get a
lot more head movements between partitions.
But its too late for that now. If I ever get another
hard drive, I won't make the same mistake again.)

It aint a mistake.

The latest version of PerfectDIsk (www.raxco.com) seems to have
features like what you wasking for, but I've never played with them.

(I have no relationship other than being a satisifed customer of Raxco
products. )

What makes you think there is one?
(Right, the answer was in your question)
2. Is there any defragmentation program that works with win98se

Yes. And guess what, it's the one that comes with Windows. Great, eh?
3. Do any programs allow you to lock/freeze/keep specific

So make a small partition that is only as large as you will ever need to.
Then files can't go wandering very far, to where ever they are moved.
(I know: I should have partitioned the drive into several
smaller ones. But its too late for that now.

Nope, it's not. Unless you think that making backups is for whimps.

Thanks, Al.

I'll check it out as soon as I post this thank-you.

(PS: Did you see Rod Speed's response. Maybe he's right--I
don't know that much about hard drives. But it sure seems like he
took a couple of "grumpy pills" this morning.)

Thanks again, not only for your helpful info, but even more for
your positive attitude.

I dont need pills to post like that, stupid |-)

I prefer to tell it like it is myself, particularly when you are
likely to waste lots of time and achieve absolutely nothing.

Would you rather I didnt even mention that problem ?

With all due respect, Mr Speed, your knowledge and info may be very
accurate, but your delivery sucks. Your sarcasm and slamming-tone can
nullify a newbie's attempt to assess the information you provide.
I __do__ appreciate the info that I was able to extract out of
your post, but the seeming hostility/ridicule it was framed in left a
lot to be desired.
I have skimmed through this newsgroup and discovered that you
are a regular poster here. You obviously want to help others and you
give up a ___good___ deal of your time, as well as knowledge. I
just wish that it were presented a little more civily.

With no 'respect' at all, gutless, you get no say
what so ever on that or anything else at all. Ever.

Only the fools. They dont matter a damn.

I dont appreciate your pompous preaching.

I've been doing it since likely long before you were
even born and heaps must find what I have told them
useful, because they keep coming back with more
questions, even years after the first one from them.

You get to like that or lump that.

Your hangups are your problem.
