Defragmentation problems in Windows XP

An interesting problem that I cannot crack! I tried to defrag one sector of
my hard disk. The program got 14% of the way through then said, "defrag
complete, some files could not be defragmented. See the report to find out
which files could not be defragmented" There were no files listed, and that
portion of the hard disk will not defragment. The other two portions will.
Any suggestions gratefully received

Please post a copy of a Report after running Disk Defragmenter. The
explanation is it the Report but it is not always easy to see.

Select View Report and click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt
in your My Documents Folder and post a copy.

It looks to me like the culprit is lots of fragmented folders. Can folders
be defragmented? Does it matter if a folder is fragmented?

Thanks for replying. I really don't know what has gone on! I'm rather hoping
Gerry has some ideas!

This Report is puzzling. It says you have 2,237 fragmented files but
only one, the MFT is recorded. There are a few files which are never
listed in a Files that cannot be Defragmented List. The MFT Table and
the Pagefile are the most common. The Main Report always provides
information on these files.

Have you ever used a third party disk defragmenter?

Is Hibernation enabled or disabled?

In an attempt to see if it is possible to get a "better" report.

I suggest you download and run cCleaner (freeware)
http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.asp
http://www.ccleaner.com/

With any cleaner you need to proceed with caution. To be safe you
should create a restore point before using cCleaner. cCleaner also
offers backup before removal.

When using cCleaner think twice before checking Autocomplete Form
History under Internet Explorer. You do get a warning but this one has
irritating consequences. You may need to restore your system's
recollection of passwords after use so keep a record off computer so
that they can easily be re-entered.

Leave the Scan for Issues option alone.

Next select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk
CleanUp, More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest
System Restore point.

Then select Start, Run, type cmd and hit ENTER, then type cd\ and hit
ENTER and that takes you to the c:\> prompt for you then to type
chkdsk C: /F /R. Answer Yes to run at next boot and type exit to return
to Desktop. Restart your computer.

After chkdsk has run try Disk Defragmenter again and post a copy of the
Report after it has been run.

You are a complete star! I did as you suggested and, bingo, defrag works.
Report appended below. To answer your questions, I haven't used a third party
defragmenter, but I have used indexdatsuite to remove clutter and that may be
to blame. I wasn't hibernating either. I tried to run chkdsk last night but,
like the defragmenter, it skipped through the stages too quickly, but today
it identified all sorts of broken files. Thank you so much. Here's the new

Please check the defragmentation report for a list of these files.

However, no files are listed!

I am not seeing an issue there. I think the best advice would be to ignore
the message and move on. ;-)

Julie,

Even with the additional information provided in your last response - my
advice remains the same. ;-)

I see no issue and I would ignore the message.
