I get these errors when I try to defragment a drive that

Application popup: Windows - Delayed Write Failed :
Windows was unable to save all the data for the file
E:\$Mft. The data has been lost. This error may be caused
by a failure of your computer hardware or network
connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.
The external E:\ Drive then vanishes from the Disk
Management page and the My Computer section, but
reappears after a complete shutdown and reboot. The
errors occur when I try to degragment the volume again as
suggested by the XP Pro Defragmentation Utility once I
analyze the drive.
Any ideas?
Other questions:
Should you and can you defrag a backup (A Norton Ghost
image or an Acronis True Image, or a standard XP backup
Utility backup?
Should you have the volume you are backing up to be
monitored by System Restore?
Thanks,
Ron
