Cannot get defrag to analyze; nothing happens when I click on "analyze" or
"defragment". Do I have a setting incorrect somewhere?

Try running disk clean up 1st,then go to run, type:cmd In cmd type:Defrag C:
If it fails,type:Defrag /REVERT Then:EXIT Restart computer,retry in cmd

Defrag with XP SP2 needs the DCOM Server Process Launcher service running.

Click Start, Run and type SERVICES.MSC
Double-click the DCOM Server Process Launcher service
Set it's startup type to "Automatic"
Restart Windows.

Followed your recommendations, and thank you for them. When I typed the
instruction I received the message: "Access Denied". What should I do next?

Log on under an admin-level account. Your account doesn't have the
requisite permissions to defrag. There are obvious reasons why non-admin
users should not be performing admin-level operations.
