Defragging multiple partitions...

Each time I run defrag on a different partition, a new instance of
dfrgntfs.exe gets loaded in memory and does *not* shut down. I've been
seeing this on every single one of my XP machines since XP came out. No
patch, hotfix or service pack (that I've found) has ever fixed this problem.

Is this even being acknowledged by MS?

Hi,

True, but after you exit the Disk Defragmenter, all the dfrgntfs.exe
processes are ended. So i think that should not cause any issues.

[I know I'm late in following my own post, but...]

I know it does. That was not my question. :-)

There's a difference between working around a minor bug, and a software
developer acknowledging its existance, which is what I'm interested in.
Microsoft has a history of taking its sweet time for addressing minor
problems, so I was wondering if we at least passed checkpoint A on this one.

Another of my XP pet peeves is separate instances of explorer.exe launching
themselves with high priority...

And the Links toolbar that keeps showing up despite all the "don't show it"
settings and flags.

(To all do-gooders who feel like jumping on any of these: I've been over
them repeatedly on this newsgroup already. Please don't point me to the
usual "fixes", I can still reproduce all those problems).

Hi Homer,

I come from a non-dev background so i dont know much about this, but i guess a separate process of
dfrgntfs.exe is needed for each volume on the disk. Hence the multiple instances.

Yes......uh.........................................

I wasn't looking for the *reason* it happens...

Then what were you looking for ?

Is my original post not showing in your reader?

I only wanted to know whether this "problem" was even acknowledged by
Microsoft. I know the why's and everything, I just wanted to know whether I
should expect this to ever get addressed or not...

It is NOT a problem. That is by design---each volume requires a process of
dfrgntfs.exe.

Tsk. Then if it needs different processes for each volume, you'd think
you'd be able to defrag multiple volumes simultaneously...

OTOH I can understand not allowing that for partitions that are on the same
drive, but different physical drives...why not...

Just saying, is all...<shrug>

You can, just open multiple Command Prompt windows and execute a single DEFRAG command in each. You won't like the results, your computer will be very slow.

I'd rather have multiple instances running simultaneously and have the
system slow down (and walk away for an hour) than have the system slow down
anyway but have to stick around so that each time one partition's done I can
start another...

"Another command line or GUI defragmenter is already running. Only one
instance of Windows Disk Defragmenter can run at a time."

I suppose I could write a batch file to queue them up...

See www.dougknox.com, Win XP Fixes, Defrag All Hard Disks. Script file that will do it for you. One version just DEFRAGs, the other DEFRAGs and creates a log file.
