Defrag

My Drive C (in Sony laptop VGN-A190 which has large capacity D drive but
small capacity C drive) is a mess and although there is now more than 25%
free (I have it compacted) it is impossible to do a thorough defrag with many
files remaining "scattered". Is this because of the compacting (if
uncompacted it goes well below 15% free) or is there another reason that I
can solve and actually completely defrag the drive which I believe is slowing
the computer to a crawl...

Log on to an administrator level account
to remove the internet cache
<>open ie
<>on the menu select tools
<>select internet options(the last one on the list)
<>when the new window opens
<>click delete files(this will also ask to delete offline files
do this as well
<> delete cookies
got to each user in turn
<>c:\documents and settings\%username%
<>open local settings(this folder is usually hidden)
<>navigate to the temp folder and delete all files, leave the folders
as many programs use the folders for temp data storage
<>navigate to temporary internet files\content.IE5 and remove all folders
<> empty the recycle bin
<> if you use norton empty the protected recycle bin

see if this gives you the room to do the defrag

Thank you so much for your kindness. However I got space to over 30% but
still it only defrags 12% before giving up.
