23 Ways To Speed WinXP Without Defrag
http://www.techbuilder.org/recipes/59201471
While it was true that defragmenting helped older PCs, it no longer
applies. Today we have 7200-RPM (rotations per minute) hard-disk
drives with improved seek and latency times; many also contain an 8-MB
cache buffer. Let's not forget Windows XP's ultra-efficient NTFS (NT
File System). For PCs, servers, and workstations equipped with these
innovations, defragmenting no longer makes much improvement, if any,
to system performance.

Enable or disable boot defrag
http://www.rdisruption.com/docs/xp%...ce tweaks.htm
A great new feature in Microsoft Windows XP is the ability to do a
boot defragment. This places all boot files next to each other on the
disk to allow for faster booting. By default this option in enables
but on some builds it is not so below is how to turn it on.
Start Regedit. If you are unfamiliar with regedit please refer to our
FAQ on how to get started.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftDfrgBootOptimiz
eFunction
Select Enable from the list on the right.
Right on it and select Modify.
Change the value to Y to enable and N to disable.
Reboot your computer.

Running XP's Disk Defragmenter from the command line
http://techrepublic.com.com/5100-10...tml?tag=nl.e064
f you encounter a hard disk that is extremely fragmented, running the
GUI version of Windows XP's Disk Defragmenter can take an excessive
amount of time to defragment the disk. Not only does it take time to
actually defragment the disk, but there is a lot of overhead involved
in managing the operating system and the GUI while simultaneously
running Disk Defragmenter.
Fortunately, you can speed up the process by booting the system into
the Safe Mode With Command Prompt configuration and then running the
command line version of Disk Defragmenter. Follow these steps:
1. Restart Windows XP.
2. As the system boots up, press [F8] to display the Operating System
Choices menu.
3. Press [F8] again to display the Windows Advanced Options menu.
4. Select the Safe Mode With Command Prompt option.
5. Select the Windows XP operating system and log in.
6. When the Command Prompt window appears, type Defrag to see a list
of options for running the command line version of Disk Defragmenter.
Note: Keep in mind that your command line version doesn't provide any
feedback on the operation's progress, so be patient until it completes
the operation.

Automatic Hard Drive Maintenance

Batch files trace their lineage back to DOS, but they're still handy
for everyday Windows chores. This one scans your hard drive for errors
and then defrags it automatically. If you have the appropriate apps,
you can make it scan for viruses, back up data, and perform other
chores. Click here to download the file and instructions for Windows
XP.
