I cannot get the defragmentor to work. When I go to start the defragmenter
I get the message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file.
You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." I am the
administrator.
I'm on a two computer network with the other computer running Windows XP
Professional. I am running Windows XP Home.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Perry.

Not quite sure what I was to do - but went to site, ran the program at Item
No. 280the and still cannot run the Defrag. Same error message.

Dear Perry,

Try using an account that is ONLY a member of Administrators. In
Windows XP (and NT, for that matter) I have found on several occasions
that being a member of Guests or Users may cause an account to act as
if it is not a member of Administrators.

Under "Safe Mode" an account came up that was called "Administrator". I
assume this is what you mean. I logged on and tried. No luck. I also
tried using my own account and again no luck.
Do I have to re-install? What are the implications of doing this? (I'd
dearly love to clean out most of the software on this computer (would this
happen?) but dread re-installing drivers etc.)

Thanks in advance,
Perry.

Dear Perry,

Click Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management.
Go to System Tools, Local Users and Groups, Users. Locate your
account under Users and click the Member Of tab. This will list the
groups you belong to. If there is anything listed besides
Administrators, click each to highlight, then click Remove.

There shouldn't be any need to be a member of more than just
Administrator, but you could possibly have soem strange application
that requires something else. Not likely, but write down the groups
befor you delete them, just in case you want to add them back later.

If this isn't clear, or yyou have any problems with it, Write me an
email and we'll take it from there.

Did as you suggest but got the original message which is: "Windows cannot
access the specified device, path or
file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."
It's a little frustrating!

I really appreciate this help as I am completely stuck. A couple of other
people have suggested that I may have a corrupt file but I have a feeling
that all the files are OK, it's just a setting. However I will be seeing if
I can check out their suggestions.

PS the first thing I did when I ran into this problem was download your
software but of course got same message.

Thanks again,
Perry.

If you get this same message running Diskeeper, then it definitely sounds
like a permission error. Diskeeper requires that System have full access to
the drive in order to run.
