Anyone else notice that the builit-in DEFRAG progam is virutally
useless in XP? If you look at the display of before and after, they
are almost identical.

One day I sat there and did repeated defrags, and the drive never did
improve any that I can see. Is there a fix for this?

Defrag in W2000 works perfectly, you can see the graphical difference,
but XP appears worthless to me.

Learn how to defrag a hd that holds the OS.1st disable the paging file on C:
Restart computer,back in xp,disk clean up,then defrag.After,reset to paging
file on C: Restart computer. You can also run defrag in cmd

If you do repeated defrags without doing anything else to the drive (e.g.
saving new files) there won't be a change because the drive is already
defragged, nothing has changed since the last defrag.

The amount of free space is very important when
running Disk Defragmenter. A minimum of 15% is
required but sometimes 20% is desirable if the
drive / partition contains one or more large files.
You can run Disk Defragmenter a second and third
time if files are still fragmented after the first run.
You can put files more prone to fragment in their
own partitions.

Hope this helps.

===> No, if the drive was fragmented to start with, the two
windows are NOT identical. If the drive was NOT fragmented,
well, then, there's nothing to do, so there will NOT be any
difference! Duh!

===> Well duh, there was nothing to defrag!

Also, you won't see a difference in the "estimated" images until
AFTER the defrag is completed, IFF there is anything to defrag.
Count your blessings.

Then go back to W2000 if you feel that way. Why use a system you
think isn't working right?
