Why does my defreag take many many hours?

I have a 40 GB hdd.

It shows a before and after graphic and even the after shows files
fragmented. Why?

if you have a screensaver going stop it I also go to ctl
alt del and stop all programs that are running that I can
stop without restarting the computer. I found that my
screen saver restarting caused defag to restart.

Some background applications could be accessing the harddisk and the files.
Try in safe mode. Disable background applications using Start->Run->MSCONFIG
and uncheck everything and run Defrag. It should work.
