I had the a problem (windows hanging at restart after enabling disk
protection) with Steady State. Then I stopped (power off) and started the
system. From then on I cannot get the windows Defragmenter to work. I
uninstalled SS, but the same problem persists. I think since I stopped and
started the machine I am not able to fully uninstall SS. Is there anyway to

1. Uninstall SS fully
2. Get Defragmentor to work

I also tried to install SS again and then uninstalled it. Still the problem
with deframent is not solved.

Please help!!! I am using windows XP pro. I posted in the steadystate forum
and was told I should post it here since it is a System Issue.

Hello Gerry,

Thanks for responding.

I tried the suggestions but it did not work. In my case defrag console comes
up without any problem. But when I hit defragment button nothing happens.

Is there an Error Report in Event Viewer?

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Is this a home or office computer?

What is the exact version of Windows XP installed on the computer?

Professional, Home Edition, Media Center?

My reason for asking is that these type of restrictions are normally
found in networked office computers overseen by an Administrator. Is it
a Desktop or Laptop? What is the ownership history?

How many user accounts? Are any subjected to parental controls?

Why were you prompted to install Steadystate?

Sorry I missed giving you this info. It is an XP prof. I am the first and
only owner.

It has two users, one admin and the other a limited user.

I decided to install Steadystate (in after thought not a wise decision)!!

I delete the policy from the registery and defrag seems to work now.

Thanks for your help!

You're welcome.
