Looking for defrag-program for my XP. Any proposal, any
recomendationl?
Best wishes Jorgen Jensen.

OO looks good, but d/l it is very slow; I'm on cable modem and the
speed is 3.0kb/sec very very slow, even for dialup. ;)

I'm on a dialup at 50.6. My d/l speed was 5.6kb/sec. Go figure!

It may be worth the wait. A little background as I recall:

OO-defrag was developed through efforts of the German government so
they would not have to use Diskeeper which was built into Win2k. The
long history of Diskeeper being involved with the Scientology cult
made them very suspicious. If anyone has a reason to be a little
paranoid about cults, I would say it is the German people.

I'm using O&O Defrag 2000 Freeware Edition.
http://file2.mydrivers.com/tools/drive/oodfre_V3.5.562_english.exe

O&O Software's website is http://www.oo-software.com/ or
http://www.oosoft.de/ They no longer support the freeware defragger and
seem to have removed it from their website, but the link I supplied above,
as well as others, still have it available.

There is the free PowerDefrag as shown in my "Favorite Freeware" page.

However, the freeware of PowerDefrag is gone:

"We have withdrawn Power Defrag 2 Lite from this download location because
it is incompatible with certain newer software programs released by other
vendors. If you are looking for a defragmentation product, please try the 30
day trial of Power Defrag 3.01." Per http://www.powerdefrag.com/ Downloads
page.

But I was never a fan of PowerDefrag.
I prefer ScanDefrag 4.2a at: http://www.blueorbsoft.com/scandefrag/ .

Cheers,

Only one problem, That's not a defrag program. It's a script that runs other defrag
programs at startup...

Yes, this is true. However, it does help overcome some of the problem
typically associated with the defragger bundled with Win9x/Me, especially if
it's run in restrictive mode. And the reason that I even bothered to post it
was to offer it as an alternative to a prior post in this thread
recommending PowerDefrag, which is (IIRC) also a front-end to the bundled
Win9x/Me defragger. It's freeware edition is no longer available (and I much
prefer ScanDefrag) and wanted to make sure that anyone looking for the no
longer existent freeware edition of PowerDefrag knew that there was a
(better) alternative available.

I'm sorry if I confused anyone into thinking that ScanDefrag was a
stand-alone defragger.

Greetings...

Unfortunately, the best defrag program (for FAT32) I've ever seen was the Norton speed
disk that was in system tools (1998/99 version) - the fastest one I've ever seen...
Probably actually still had some Peter Norton code in it... I bought it many moons ago,
and I've heard that it's possible to run it without installing the whole package. That
you can simply copy the speed disk program off the install disk and run it as a stand
alone program... I suppose we could classify it (and any other Peter Norton product NOT
completely destroyed my Symantec) as abandonware...

It's a pity, that such a critical system tool category has been so ignored...
Currently, I use disk keeper lite in it's disabled mode - why it needs to install a
startup service is beyond me... Every one I've ever seen comment on it, claims it's
sooo fast, but my experience is that it's very slow... But, it's the one I use, and I've
tested every one I can find... Unfortunately it looses 5 points immediately for being
crippleware... I'd dump it in a minute if I found anything that works even slightly
worse.

I'd have to admit that in the end - there are no "good" freeware disk defraggers... At
least none that I would recommend above any of the others...

Unfortunately, I have to agree with you.

I've also found Diskkeeper Lite to be slow. That's why I am as happy or
happier to use ScanDefrag in restrictive mode to reboot my PC, do a MS Disk
Cleanup (although I prefer to use Disk Cleaner and Index.Dat Suite
interactively for more thorough cleaning), MS ScanDisk, and finally MS
Defrag, with the PC to be shutdown when all is done. I do this when I'm done
with the PC for the day and going to bed.

I did find the Norton Speed Disk in SystemWorks 2002 to be faster than
either MS Defrag (no surprise) or Diskkeeper Lite. (And nearly as fast as
the SystemWorks v1 from 98/99.) But the SystemWorks 2002 install eats up
quite a bit of HD space and the Norton AV tends to make my system sluggish
as it seems to be somewhat bloated, despite its excellent reviews.
