at the end of defrag i get message saying couldnot defrag
file/s etc, file name windows/memory.dmp...does any1 know
what this means and how i can resolve this...many thanks

At some point your pc has crashed giving a blue screen of death (bsod). When
this happens XP generates a file which dumps everything from memory into the
file. This is what your 'memory.dmp' file is. You may actually find that, if
you have had a number of crashes, there may be a number of these files on
your pc. The defrag program will not defrag these files because, while they
are important for troubleshooting problems, they can be deleted. You might
try searching for the dmp files and deleting them. Use the search pattern
*.dmp

In addition to John's comments if you have large files / fragments you may need to run Disk Defragmenter more than once to complete the process. This is particularly the case if the free disk space is less than 15% -you see happening where there is less than 20%!
