Hello:

I was working on someones computer today which has XP on the system. When
the computer normally starts up, there is an option to log on as either one
of two users. I installed some new software and new hardware on the system
and at the end decided to defrag the system. However, while defraging I got
sidetracked and accidentally shutdown the computer. Now when the system
starts only one user is listed and there is heavy HDD activity. My question
is, is Windows still running the defrag and is preventing the logon as the
other user until the defrag is finished? Or, did I seriously screw
something up?

Chris.

Chris,

When you shutdown the system, the defrag would have stopped and would not
have restarted when Windows rebooted. If you look in Task Manager, what
processes appear to be using most of the CPU time?

Hi Greg:

Thanks for the reply. I went to her place today to get the info. you
requested and try something I found in the Microsoft knowledge base....
funny thing is, she says her system is back to normal! And I thought
Windows 98 behaved strange.

Thanks again....
Chris.
