Does defragging a drive, which actually is a RAID 0 setup consisting
of two HDDs, work? I defragged last week my RAID 0 drive and
basically things got ugly after that - Windows files corrupted, BIOS
changed, etc.

It is a worry that if one drive goes down, it tugs the other drive
with it and I'm purely at the mercy of a backup. Tell me, is the
performance *that good* compared to a non-RAID setup?
As another poster has said, for big file transfers like editing and saving/retrieving large scans from medium format photographs it
makes the system much more pleasant to use. To check that I really was seeing a big performance hike, I ran the SiSift 'Sandra'
'file system' benchmark on it and it left the conventional IDE system drive standing.
