Defrag Limitation?

Help Me

Does Defrag have a file size limitation?
It will no longer defrag my outlook.pst file since my
upgrade to 2003 the file is 10GB. Can defrag just not
handle a file that size or what else could be the problem?

20% of free space on your hard drive for a good defrag
 
Nope I have 30.27% Available. If you want to recheck my
calculations (which could be wrong) I have 111GB of total
space and 33.6GB Free
 
Out of interest...how do you manage to have a .pst file that is 10 GB?
That's more than all the software installed on my computer, by a wide
margin. (And that includes Windows, Office and much more.)

You need to split up that PST file anyway - Outlook does not support PST
files that big.
 
lots of large mails with tremendous amounts document
attachments. I have all mail sent and received to me for
the past 6 years minus spam. Countless hours of
compilation.
 
Outlook 2003 can Support pst files 20GB+ with a NTFS
partition. If your using fat32 then you are limited to a
4GB pst, only becasue FAT 32 won't allow a file to be
bigger than that (4GB that is).
 
Unless you're planning to reply to someone who sent you mail 6 years ago,
may I suggest that you save your old email as separate files.

You are correct in that Outlook 2003 can support an OST/PST file up to
(approximately) 33TB.. However, the reason for something like this does NOT
exist.

If you have attachments, you are better off saving them and burning to
DVD/CD.
If you have that many messages, Archive off into seperate files - burn them
to CD/DVD as well.
(You can keep them on the system, just better organized by
year/decade/project/whatever - into their own PST.)

Instead of causing possible ssues with a large file (not to mention you are
going to havce trouble backing it up and if that Hard Drive crashes.... Buh

Back up is done to a DVD+RW, so thats not an issue. We
got office 2003 so we could combine all 53 of the PST's we
had into one PST so that it is searchable. Only one PST
is searchable at a time, so dividing the mail would be
going backwards for us. on our situation I downloaded
defrag professional and it will not defrag that PST either.
I even defraged in safe mode and it still won't move that
PST.

Then perhaps you should consider setting up and Exchange 2003 server and
putting it all there - that way not only is it compacted by Exchanges
database manipulations (thus as small as possible) but you could back it up
more eaily to a large tape device and connect to it with OWA - making it
accessible by multiple people/places.

As for the backup to DVD+RW.. That's still only 4.5(approx) GB.. You said
10GB - so you already have to do something special to back it up, eh?
