Defrag is not finishing

Win98 on a PII laptop. Disk is about 85% full.

When Defrag runs, it gets about 60% done and then stops and starts over.

Could this be a virus or something else?

Thanks in advance.

Most likely you have something running in the background such as a firewall
or AV program. The best advice is to restart your PC in safemode, turn off
all unnecessary programs and then run Defrag.

It could be a background process as the other guy suggested, but it
could also be that your disk is too full. The smaller the disk, the
worse that 85% becomes.

The only times I have ever experienced this problem is when some
application or utility was running in the background. Before defragging
make sure all non-essential operations are closed. If you have
insufficient disk space, you normally receive a message informing you of
that condition.

This is quite common for the old OS's, you may check out my tip
pages at http://www.dannysdailys.com. I may have an article on it

The long and the short: Most probably you have the screen save
active. Or, power schemes set up in control panel. You may als
want to check for scheduled events in control panel as well

These must all be shut off before a defrag. Or, every time one o
these programs awakens, it trips the frag all over again

By the way, 85% full is entering the danger zone. I'm assuming thi
is a very small drive. Windows reserves 200 megs just for th
recycle bin. Watch your space

Hope this help

This would be a good question for alt.windows-98. Ask Shep, he da man
over there. He has a web site with some good 98 utilities and a copy
of WinME defrag, an improved version that is 98-compatible.

But try the safe mode approach first, and let us know.

no, this simply means there is a program running which is changing one
of the files

you can't change any files while the defrag is running...

you didn't see it, but it tells ya

"files changed, starting over"

what ya do is...

goto systinternals.com
download, "process explorer" it is extensive view of running processes,
and who owns them...

also...check your startup batch. for win98, I believe you can use stock
utility
under start, accessories, system, it's over there...I can't remember
right off..
my point is...kill of process except for windows.

Good luck

Thanks to everyone for the help :-)

I deleted everything off the harddrive I'm not using and gained about
300M in free space.

Then hit Ctr-Alt-Del to get the task manager and ended anything that
didn't belong there.

Started the Defrag and went to bed.

It was done when I got up this morning. (Yeah)

I'm thinking of buying a new laptop this year. Is there anything new in
the works, I should wait for?

oh suuuurree...

only thing is...when you buy the latest greatest, turn around and look
again
and you are outdated! hehe

i would go with a mainstream name on the laptop
as well as...do some googling with the one you might buy

say you was thinking about a MOJO 3636 (ficticious)

google up something like... mojo 3636 sucks

or

mojo3636 problems
etc...

kind of reverse engineer approach
