running windows xp home edition, service pack 1. defrag
hangs (i run it in "safe" mode). there's an article about
this (knowledge base article 218160) for 98 and me. does
it apply for xp? anyone know what i cam do to prevent the
hang?
thanks!

Go to my computer, right click on your hard drive, select
tool tab and click on error checking. This will check the
volumn for errors.Do this before defrag.Also note,you
must give it time to defrag,it will hang at times during
the process...Good luck.

Also, defrag needs exlusive access to the drive. If you
do any reading or writing to the drive during this
process it can cause problems. Also, if you have a
process that is trying to access the harddrive during
defgrag it will fail or hang. This was the case in ME
and back but I have not run into this particular problem
in XP.

You've not run into this on Windows XP since it is no longer an issue.
The defrag APIs in Win2K and WinXP are specifically designed to run on
an active volume -- no need to stop reading or writing during the
defrag proccess. Granted, there are applications, such as *some* virus
scanners, that will bog down a defrag operation, but the days of doing
noting on your hard drive when defragging are over.

I hope this helps -
