Hi

Defrag.exe will not run. It has run many times in the past but now, I am no
longer run the application. Please can you let me know what I should do?

Thank you in advance

Viruses attack executable files and prevent them from running. It's an
outside chance you've picked up a nasty.

Do you have antivirus software?
Have you updated it recently (to get up-to-date virus signatures)?
Have you scanned for viruses?

Yes, I have nortons installed and run it regularly.

Please note that I can run defrag from ...c: drive > select Properites >
Tools....

The problem is that I cannot launch it from C:\WINDOWS\system32\defrag.exe
directory.

Any ideas?

Hello,

Running defrag from that directly is a console (or command-line) type.

To run the windows GUI, you have to execute "%SystemRoot%\system32\dfrg.msc"

Defrag needs at least 15% free space on the hard drive to run. How much
free space do you have.
Also, you can run defrag my right clicking My Computer, choose Manage, then
defrag.

On last trying to defrag a heavily populated hard disk it needed 4% not 15%.
It then gave an option to proceed anyway - which it did. It doesn't sound
as though this is the cause of the OP's problem.

Only going on what MS say. What do they know?

What do they know?
They made a botch of converting Giant Spyware (a perfectly working piece of
software) to Windows Defender Beta1 through to Beta2. There were many
references to Giant Spyware remaining and it didn't work very well.

They have upgraded IE6 to IE7 and taken out some functions which were part
of the basic ethos of Windows.

There are, presumably, other examples.

I'll leave it to answer your own question.

Why are you getting at me? I'm just trying to help. Actually, MS probably
forgot more than you know. See, we can both shout at each other.

I'll tell you what they know. Since you have widened the discussion to anti
spyware for some reason, have you got any idea just how complex say Windows
Server 2003 is? Have you studied it? Are you MS certified? WTF is 'the
basic ethos of Windows'? Frankly, I just don't believe you when you say
that a drive defragged at 96% capacity.

I'm not coming back to this thread so don't bother to reply to me.

Nothing happens when clicking on Defragment or Analyze in Disk Defragmenter
(dfrg.msc).

With XP SP2 the DCOM Server Process Launcher service needs to be running for
Defrag to work.

Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click DCOM Server Process Launcher |
Set the startup type to Automatic | Click Apply |
Click the Start button | When the service starts, click OK |
Close Services | Reboot

<quote>
Note the following things will fail if this service is not running:
The builtin defrag will fail to work, and if running defrag from the command
line one gets this error:
Windows cannot connect to the Disk Defragmenter engine

Fix Windows Built in Defragmenter.

Start | Run | Type: regsvr32 dfrgui.dll | Click OK

You should get a RegSvr32 message: DllRegisterServer in dfrgui.dll
succeeded. Click OK.

Start | Run | Type: regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll | Click OK

You should get a RegSvr32 message: DllRegisterServer in dfrgsnap.dll
succeeded. Click OK.

Then navigate to C:\Windows\Inf ...
Start | Run | Type: %windir%\inf | Click OK |
Locate dfrg.inf, right click on dfrg.inf and click on Install

Anyone getting the "Disk Defragmenter Could not start" message and on
Windows XP Home This is what worked for me. Go to Control Panel, Select
System and select the Advanced Tab. Now Select Settings Under Performance
and again select the advanced tab. Under Virtual Memory select Change. Make
sure that the Paging File Size for selected Drive for the Drive partition
you want to Defrag is set to System Managed Size. Once I did this Defrag
started working again. I don't know how the Page file got turned off on my
system but this has been driving me mad for months!! Hope it helps someone
else out there !!!

Note if having disabled or set a low custom size for the pagefile, then
defrag might not work. If using WinXP set the virtual memory to "System

The accepted guideline for minimum free space is 15%. However you
will need more if there are exceptional large files within the volume.
Also the situation if an immovable pagefile in other than a single
contiguous space, will make defragmenting more problematic.

Quote from link below:

Before Using the Disk Defragmentation Tools

When you use the disk defragmentation tools, keep the following
restrictions in mind:
•You can defragment only local volumes, and you can defragment only
one volume at a time.
•You must be logged on as an administrator or as a member of the
Administrators group to defragment volumes.
•You cannot use the Disk Defragmenter command-line tool (Defrag.exe)
while the Disk Defragmenter snap-in is open.
•You cannot defragment volumes that are marked as dirty by the file
system. You must run Chkdsk on the dirty volume before you can
defragment it. To determine whether a volume is dirty, use the fsutil
dirty query command. For more information about running Chkdsk, see
“Chkdsk” earlier in this chapter.

In addition, to obtain best results when you use the disk
defragmentation tools, follow these guidelines:
•Ensure you have at least 15 percent free disk space when you
defragment a volume. Windows XP Professional uses the free disk space
as a sorting area for file fragments.
Although the defragmentation tools can partially defragment volumes
that have less than 15 percent free space, for best results delete
unneeded files or move them to another volume to increase the free
space to at least 15 percent. You can also use the Disk Cleanup tool
to delete unnecessary files. For more information about Disk Cleanup,
see Windows XP Professional Help.
