I have a Sony VAIO with XP home edition and 20 GB hard
drive. The defrag utility never gives me more than 13%
free space although I know that I have a LOT more space
than that on my hard drive. I've deleted tons of stuff
but defrag says I don't even have the 15% free space it
requires to run properly. Can anyone help me solve this?
Thank you very much.

Open "My Computer" and right-click on "Local Disk (C:)" and select
Properties.

What is the Used and Free space as told by the numbers farthest to the
right?

Michael,

Just so there is no confusion, defragmenting does NOT gain you free space.

The built-in defragmenter requires at least 15% free space in order to run
effectively. If you don't, then results may vary. Nothing you can do about
it except for delete stuff in order to get free space back (I don't consider
this a good solution) or look at a 3rd party defragmenter that doesn't
require so much free space.
