Defrag doesn't defrag

Whe I defrag my main drive, it still looks extremely fragmented, no
matter how many times I defrag it. It appears my "My Documents" and
PST files are not being defragemented.

Steve

Try running chkdsk first before running defrag. This will solve the defrag
issues in your system.

Use chkdsk /f to check and fix disk errors and then run defrag /f .

Naresh,

Thanks for your help, but I did everything you suggested, and it
didn't work. I first did a chkdsk /f, which was uneventful, and then
I did a defrag c: /f.

The result said, after about 2 minutes (much less time than a regular
defrag on my computer:

Analyse Report
7.91% GB total, 1.90 GB (24% free) 25% fragmented (42% file
fragmentation)

Defragmentation Report
7.91% GB total, 1.90 GB (24% free) 25% fragmented (41% file
fragmentation)

C:\

I then tested the defragmentation to defrag in Windows XP's disk
defragmenter, and again received the respons "You should defragment
this volume." (And the graph looked extremely fragmented.) So I'm
still highly fragmented. Any other suggestions?

Thanks so much for your help,

Steve

Have you run sfc to check on your system files? RUN cmd to get a
command box, then
sfc /scannow
(Be sure to put the space between sfc and /scannow.)

Thanks for the suggestion. I ran sfc. It turned up no problems.

My problem is that my disk is highly fragmented (this shows up when I
run a defrag analysis). When I defrag and then run another defrag
analysis, the response again is that my disk is highly fragmented and
I need to defrag again.

Steve,

You may want to consider a 3rd party defragmenter if running the built-in
one in Safe Mode doesn't appear to make better progress on your drive. The
built-in defragmenter isn't the most capable thing :)
